What battlefields do exist? And what are their differences? What could be done to make BF more attractive apart from free valour and non-break?

Cristaline caves, Temple and Arena.

These battlefields have differences. The cristaline cave is a battlefield were you have to collect crystals in order to make points to your team. If your team gets 500 points, then you won :) Here mounts and summons are allowed, so it's an expensive battlefields (appart from blessings).
The temple is similar to the cristaline caves, you also have to gather crystals, but here you have to fusion 3 crystals in order to generate one energy shepere. Then you have to hand in this shepre to get points for your team. Here there is a restriction with summons: every player can only use 5 summons + his&her mount.
The arena is quite different to others battlefields. Here you don't have to gather crystals, just kill your enemy, everytime you win a fight is one point. You can also hand in one shepere (only one) to make an extra 2 points.

Also exist tallars, which they are for lvl 7+. Here is a bit similar to arena, because there are also no crystals, and you have to kill your enemies. The diference here is that you don't know who your enemy is, and its all vs all, so you if you're a magmar, you'll probably have to kill another magmar....

Also exists special battlefields: tournament of workship, chaotic fight (this one is easy, just one fight, the teams can be mixed with humans and magmars, and it's like tallar, you don't know your enemy), and gates of chaos (here you don't go for valor, you go for chaos rep).

To make more attractive battlefields is easy, just remove red weapon so valor armor will be the real strongest armor, fix bugs, so players don't wait hours to join, golds in blessings and then they get removed from battlefield from a system bug (of the game) and by listening players and giving back all the money spent because of system bugs.
I'm cute :D

There's quite a lot

The most basic opening at level 3 are the caves, arena, temple

Caves is a 9v9 format battlefield where both teams try to control 3 caves: blue/green/red. blue and green crystals give 2 points, red gives 3. First team to reach 500 points win.

Temple is a 3v3 format, each team needs to gather 1 blue/green/red crystal each to make a sphere in the middle of the battlefield. First team to reach 5 points win.

Arena is a 2v2 format, each team needs to fight and win to gain 1 point, or score a sphere to win 2 points. First team to reach 5 points win.

There are more battlefields at higher levels.

Chaotic: Everyone is put into 2 groups, 1 fight, and everyone dukes it out. Winner gets more valor and also having a better reputation gained through fibulas.

Halls: starting lvl 7, a battlefield where 10 people are put into separate rooms. Everyone prepare their buffs and items and slots before leaving the room and fighting someone who will be seen as "invisible". Fight fast, hit fast, win fast. Finish 20 fights to declare the ending of Halls. top 5 by valor will receive bonus valor. A haven for competent executioners.

Equals: starting lvl 11, battlefields the same format as arena/caves/temple, only difference is, everyone is given purple gear non arsenal ( no ranks), same purple pots, same purple gnome rings, no mount, no buffs(minimal in temple and caves). Must have at least 2 gold to apply, victory conditions are same as regular arena/caves/temple.

Meridian Vaults: starting lvl 16, mags and humans are put together into two teams of 4 and fight as either zarlogs or maurins. It is like capture the flag, altered WoD style. More buffs and better armor applied based on your current valor ranks and reputations. First team to reach 300 points win.

How to make battlefields more active? many solutions

1. Change no break cc and equals cc to the same date, wed and saturday
2. Change Sunday to halls no break and 1.5x for all other battlefields
3. Bring back insignia, but restrict the timing on it and make halls no break during insignia. Welcome to halls galore. (sucks for low levels but you have enough bfs running around on a daily basis compared to mid levels to highest levels in game)
4. Mix mag/humans as same as vaults or chaotic. That way, it all comes down to YOUR own individual performance, not relying on the team to carry you through the bf to win, and you don't need to wait for battlefields now; only need the number of people to go and have fun. No one will know who you are with in the battlefields until you are there.
5. Be more severe with leechers in their punishments; they ruin battlefields more than red armor and overbuffed players.

I have given full explecation about battlefields HERE so I will just skip to the point what can be changed.

1. Red armors to be totaly removed (weapons and bows) form the battlefields.
2. Non-break, double valour and Dragon insignia to be linked with the Surge days of each battleground accordingly. Also sell anti-ageing potion (exp save one) in the same days only in the certain battlefield.
3. Blcksmith arena to get changed into regular one or get its own full day with extra valour in order to get more popular. Also would be nice if no rank purple armors get introduced, for instance half of the amount tokens are needed from the arena and rest from hunting.
4. Bring Cave trournament once per 3- months for 1 weekend only (48 hours).
5. Make a reward day during the week for tallar only since weekends are pretty busy already with another battlefields.
6. Some weekly recurring quest for tallar will be good. For instance gain 1 to 5 wins in tallar (1st to 5th place) and get valour and Undergrounds Knights reputation (if available). That will indeed help older players that didn't gain UK reputation before to get it easier.

In general I can give more proposals but this ones are major thoughts I had since long time.

The simplest way to make battlefields better is get rid of red weapons and armour as you state that join battlefields to get best armour and weapons is through valour, with the red weapons and armour this is now not the case and the people who put hard work into getting valour armour are reluctant to go.
Using no break days twice a month in all battlefields would be good this includes tallaars which is often forgotten by the admins but one of the most participated battlefield.
In summary then get rid off red armour and weapons make valour armour the best again, no need for double valour as if valour armour is best then people will do battlefields.
