50 ton = 445 kN. 100kNm/445kN = 0.225m which is the correct answer.

Heat can transfer i 3 ways. Conduction. Convection and radiation. Answer to the second question.

The very easy answer is:
In cork and polystyrene relatively much air is stored.
Cork or styrofoam bodies therefore occupy a large volume.

(Nerd stuff: Volume = V at a certain mass m.)
